Drug Charges Archives

Federal drug charges are different from state drug charges

When we discuss drug crimes, we often refer to incidents of possession or sale that occur within the state of Florida and are thus prosecuted under state laws. These state drug laws can be very complex, with many different punishable crimes and consequences, but it may surprise you to learn that there are even more types of drug crimes that you may be accused of including federal drug crimes.

Man arrested for drug possession in Florida airport

Security at the airport has always been tight, but ever since the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, personnel at the airport have become particularly zealous about screening passengers. While the ends are noble, the means of this screening has drawn some criticism, including new screening machines that take a full-body image of passengers, leading some to be concerned about a violation of privacy. Also, security officers can pull any person aside for a random pat down at any point, which some feel violates basic rights.

Florida law covers many different drug crimes

As you probably know, Florida law has very extensive establishments when it comes to drug charges, which is necessary because there are so many different types and classifications of crimes when drugs are involved. The activity in question will change the possible punishment of a conviction, and the substance in question will also play a role in determining legal penalties. Because there are so many variables, it is imperative that those who are accused of drug crimes seek legal aid as soon as possible.

Drug possession in Florida

Almost every citizen in the United States knows that many types of drugs and controlled substances are illegal to manufacture, distribute and even possess. Simply being found with a few grams of cocaine on your person or in your car could be enough to land you in prison for years and give you a criminal record. In Florida, possession of many of these substances is a third-degree felony, meaning the legal penalties are extremely severe.

Marijuana in Florida

There are many drugs that are universally considered criminal in every state, with the only variance being in the penalties depending on a number of offenses and amount of substance possessed. Things like cocaine and heroin tend to be very problematic in the eyes of the law, it is very unlikely that possession of any amount of these substances will be ignored. However, there is at least one drug that tends to be a legal gray area: marijuana.

Florida man allegedly killed over drug debt

One of the main reasons that the authorities treat certain criminal activities with such severity is that many crimes beget other criminal activity. For example, many states impose harsh laws on cocaine and heroin not only because of the dangers posed by the drugs themselves but also because of the dangers that are caused by individuals seeking the drugs. Drug crimes are arguably chief among the crimes most likely to beget more crime, with many drug lords being responsible for other violent crimes such as homicide or sexual assault.

What are Florida's laws regarding heroin?

There are an unbelievable amount of drugs circulating throughout the state of Florida, ranging from legal, prescription drugs to illegal drugs used for recreation or to satisfy an addiction. Many of these drugs are unknown to most people because it would be extremely difficult to keep up with all of the different names for all of the different drugs. However, there are some drugs that are notorious enough to be household names all across the country, let alone in Florida. One such drug is cocaine, and another is heroin.

The dangers of cocaine crimes in Florida

Cocaine is quite possibly the most notorious and infamous drug in all of Florida, with cocaine-related money affecting a great deal of Florida's development in history. Naturally, the state has a very low tolerance of cocaine and cocaine-related drug charges, so any Florida resident who is charged with a drug crime relating to cocaine should take their legal defense extremely seriously. Even if you are facing a first-time offense, you may still be surprised at how steep the penalties are.

Drug crimes that traverse state lines can easily turn into serious legal difficulty for those involved. Something that already has the potential to lead to prison time or hefty fines can be amplified if federal officials become involved.
